Veterinary Requirements for Pet Travel to Turkey

To enter Turkey from the UK, pets must meet specific requirements: they need to be microchipped, have a valid Rabies Vaccination and Rabies Serology test, and be accompanied by an Export Health Certificate.

Detailed Requirements

  • Microchipping is a quick and straightforward procedure where a tiny device is inserted under your pet’s skin. It provides a permanent identification method required by law in the UK for all Dogs and Cats.

To travel to Turkey, your pet will need an ISO 11784 / 11785 microchip.

  • Turkey requires all pets to have an up-to-date rabies vaccination using a government-approved, inactivated rabies vaccine.

✔️ Your pet must be at least 90 days old at the time of vaccination.
✔️ Ensure the rabies vaccination is valid and properly recorded.
Here’s what your Rabies vaccination documentation should include:

    • Pet details and the 15-digit microchip number.

    • Date of rabies vaccination.

    • Vaccine batch number and manufacturer.

    • Vet’s signature and practice stamp.

We also recommend the following vaccinations for cats and dogs:

🐶 Dogs: Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis

🐱 Cats: Cat flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus), Feline infectious enteritis (parvovirus), Feline leukaemia virus

🚨 Pro Tip: If you are planning to get your pet vaccinated, please note that Rabies and routine vaccinations should not be given on the same day, as they may invalidate each other.

  • To confirm that your pet's rabies vaccination has been successful, a Rabies Serology Test (also known as a Titre Test) is mandatory.

🩸 The blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
🧪 The result must show 0.5 IU/ml or higher.

We can arrange your pet’s blood test with one of our trusted London practices—quick, easy, and at a great price. 🐾

  • The Export Health Certificate (EHC) is a special document which includes and certifies that your pet fulfils the Veterinary Health Requirements to travel to Turkey. This essential document must be:

    • Issued by an Official Veterinarian, after a request is submitted to DEFRA, no more than 24hrs before the departure date, and following a physical examination of your Pet.

⚠️ N.B.: Not all vets can issue an EHC—this service is only provided by Official Veterinarians (OVs).

    • Our clients’ preferred airline for travelling with pets to Turkey is Turkish Airlines, thanks to their clear pet travel policies and excellent service ✈️

    • Travelling through other countries? 🌍 Please note that additional health certifications may be required.

    • If your pet is travelling unaccompanied, you must obtain an official import permit. Without it, your pet may be refused entry into Turkey.
You can apply for the import permit from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs
