The actual health certificate examination must be done within a specific timeframe before departure, typically within 10 days for European travel. What's the difference between an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) and Export Health Certificate (EHC)?

Animal Health Certificates (AHCs) are specifically for pet travel from the UK to European countries (EU member states, plus Norway, Switzerland). The process requires rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, microchipping, and a veterinary examination within 10 days of departure. Export Health Certificates (EHCs) are required for travel from the UK to countries outside Europe (except the USA). These certificates can be more complicated, often requiring additional preparations such as blood tests, extra vaccinations, and longer preparation timelines.

Veterinary Requirements for Pet Travel to Chile

To enter Chile from the UK, pets must meet specific requirements: they need to be microchipped, have a valid Rabies Vaccination, receive an anti-parasitic treatment (for internal and external parasites), and be accompanied by an Export Health Certificate.

Detailed Requirements

Microchipping is a quick and straightforward procedure where a tiny device is inserted under your pet’s skin. It provides a permanent identification method required by law in the UK for all Dogs and Cats.
To travel to Chile, your pet will need an ISO 11784 / 11785 microchip.
Your pet must be vaccinated against Rabies at least 30 days and no more than 12 months before travelling to Chile.
We also recommend the following vaccinations for cats and dogs:
🐶 Dogs: Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis
🐱 Cats: Cat flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus), Feline infectious enteritis (parvovirus), Feline leukaemia virus
🚨 Pro Tip: If you are planning to get your pet vaccinated, please note that Rabies and routine vaccinations should not be given on the same day, as they may invalidate each other.
According to the UK government guidance, your Rabies vaccination documentation should include:
- Pet details and the 15-digit microchip number.
- Date of rabies vaccination.
- Vaccine batch number and manufacturer.
- Vet’s signature and practice stamp.
Your pet must undergo treatment for internal and external parasites within 15 days prior to travel.
The Export Health Certificate (EHC) is a special document which includes and certifies that your pet fulfils the Veterinary Health Requirements to travel to Chile. This essential document must be:
- Issued by an Official Veterinarian, after a request is submitted to DEFRA, no more than 10 days before the departure date, and following a physical examination of your Pet.
