1. Import Permit from the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA)

First of all: you will need an Import Permit to take your dog or cat to Colombia.
Request it to the Animal Inspection and Quarantine Unit at the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) in Bogotá.

2. Veterinary Certificate

A special veterinary certificate, called Export Health Certificate, is required to travel with your dog or cat from the UK to Colombia. This certificate must be approved by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and then signed by an Official Vet (a vet that has received additional trainmen and is authorised to issue Export Health Certificates).*

3. Vaccinations 💉

There are no mandatory vaccinations to bring your pet to Colombia from the UK. However, Colombian authorities strongly recommend the following vaccines:

🐶 Dogs:

• Rabies (Rabia)

• Distemper (Enfermedad de Carré)

• Canine Hepatitis

• Leptospirosis (Canicola & Icterohaemorrhagiae)

• Parvovirus

• Parainfluenza

🐱 Cats:

• Rabies (Rabia)

• Feline Panleukopenia

🚨 Pro Tip: If you are planning to get your pet vaccinated, please note that Rabies and routine vaccinations should not be given on the same day, as they may invalidate each other.

4. Residency Requirement 🏡

A written declaration of residency must be provided to the Official Vet, confirming that your pet has been living in the UK for at least six months or since birth.

5. Clinical Examination 🩺

Your pet must undergo a veterinary health check within 96 hours before travelling. The vet must confirm that your pet is fit to travel and issue an Export Health Certificate.

6. Additional Considerations ✈️

• Travelling through other countries? 🌍 Additional health certifications may be required.

• Banned breeds: Due to safety concerns, the following dog breeds cannot be imported into Colombia:

  • Staffordshire Terrier

  • American Staffordshire Terrier

  • Bull Terrier

  • Pit Bull Terrier

  • American Pit Bull Terrier

  • Crossbreeds or hybrids of these breeds
